kALYVES TODAY
In 1913 Crete was united with Greece while a few years before it was liberated from the Turks. Kalyves started growing and in 1928 electricity came to the village six months earlier
than in Chania. The machinery producing electric power was established in the old water mill which was built by Venetians in 1640 and later it was used as an olive oil factory.
You can see that in the center of the village
During the last decades Kalyves developed in tourism.
There are two wonderful beaches in the east of Maistrali and in the west of Kyani Akti both awarded a blue flag. The cleanliness of the sea is due to the three rivers which flow into it and constantly renew the water. The biggest of these rivers, Kyliaris ,has important fauna
since migrative birds use it as a station. Also ,there are a lot of trouts and turtles which find shelter in the thick spouting.
