THE SIGHTS OF CHANIA
Kalyves are located at a strategic spot which helps you to explore the whole prefecture.
Falasarna is one of the most popular destinations famous for its delight ful beach and the enchanting sunset.
Elafonisi is also famous and unique because of the sand which has a unique pink colour.
Between these two there is Chrysoskalitisa with the monastery of Virgin Mary.
Paleochora and Sougia are in the south of the prefecture as well as Frangokastelo and Sfakia with their unique wild beauty.
The Samaria Gorge , which is popular all over the world, starts from Omalos and you can cross it in 5 or 6 hours depending on how much you enjoy it by gaping the huge rocks and if you are lucky you may meet the rare Cretan goat called Kri-Kri grazing the unique herbs
in Lefka Ori.
The exit of the gorge leads to Agia Roumeli and from there you can travel by boat to the unique shores of Loutro and Hora Sfakia.
The lake if Kournas the only one in Crete is also remarkable as well as the springs of Argyroupoli with their crystal clear waters.
Opposite of us there is Akrotiri with the airport. In the area there is the monaster of Agia Triada and of ST. Jonh in Gouverneto.
Moreover in the area there are the Venizelos Tombs where you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the sity of Chania.
The most remarkable gorges apart from the gorge of Samaria are the gorges of ST. Irini in eastern Selino as well as the gorge of Imvros in the village Imvros in Sfakia and the gorge of Theriso where the revolution took place in 10/03/1905 led by Eleftherios Venizelos.
Besides these there is the peninsula of Gramvousa where you will see the lagoon of Balos ,the isles of wild and peaceful Gramvousa and Pontikonisi.
In Maleme there is the German cemetery where 4500 Germans are buried from the second world war.
The E4 or the forth European path is a hiking path which starts from the Atlantic in Portugal, grosses the whole Europe, reaches Greece and ends up in Crete. It starts from Kasteli , goes
down to Elafonisos , crosses the whole Crete and reaches Sitia.
What you must not forget to visit is the old Venetian harbour of the city of Chania with the old lighthouse and the stoned alleys which will travel you to other eras. The Market of Chania in the centre of the city is the only one in Crete which isn’t in the open air but it is housed in a cross-shaped building. It’s foundation took place in 14/08/1911 and it starded operating in 01/11/1913. The opening ceremony was performed by Eleftherios Venizelos in 04/12/1913 three days after the ceremony of the Cretan Union. In the building 78 shops are housed.
As you will realise all these destinations are in a short distance from Kalyves and they will not make you tired at all with long hours of driving on the contrary, you will enjoy them by driving in a relaxing way
